- <p> DIED. Bernard Castro, 87, pioneer of the convertible sofa bed;
- in Ocala, Fla. After emigrating from Italy at the age of 15,
- Castro labored as an apprentice upholsterer and later hit on the
- idea of developing a sofa that could be easily turned into a bed.
- Filling the need of cramped apartment dwellers after World War II,
- his invention became an instant success. Castro, a master of
- marketing, featured his daughter Bernadette in memorable
- advertisements as the little girl who opened sofas. More than 5
- million of them have been sold.
